> I liked Montrose before he produced the soundtrack for Mr. Bones (Sega
Saturn) in 1996. Ronnie is definitely an old school musician, and
he proves it with the release of The Speed Of Sound (TSOS), a melodic instrumental
album. Montrose comes from a time when creating "music" was a priority.
> After listening to a few songs you'll probably notice the underlying
western themes in TSOS. This really makes a unique end product.
Of course, Montrose shines throughout with meaningful solos and technical
prowess. The support group does a fine job too, but the main attraction
would be the multiple guitars Montrose plays throughout TSOS.
> Although TSOS can readily be enjoyed from start to finish, I always identify
my favorite songs. I'd say 'Zero G' stands out as the best song on
the album with it's deep guitar and soothing synthesizer rhythms.
Next, 'Mach 1' is just a straight out impressive jam. For something
different, check out 'Telstar' while imagining Clint Eastwood telling someone,
"go ahead, make my day". Anyway you cut it, Montrose has come through
with a unique record for the instrumental fan. |
BOTTOM
LINE:
> I really like instrumental songs, and that's what The Speed Of Sound
provides. If you want to enjoy some music without stupid or offensive
lyrics, then this album is the ticket. It's music first.
