Shinobi12.16.2001 | PSO Memories v.3 | Index
     > Just when you think someone is gone forever, they come back with a vengeance! Yesterday was a weird day, as the US PSO servers were down for most of it. That being said, the Force was strengthened by a name not seen in a long, long time... But first, I'll give you the events leading up to that...

     > Dead servers meant I spent most of my time in open games on Oberon ("the evil ship" -- LMAO). Anyway, I was in this game with three other people; a Malek (HUmar Lv112), James (RAmar Lv105), and Didlit (HUnewearl Lv124). James was using a SPREAD from the start, and it didn't much bother me. Then his French language setting cohort, Malek, whipped out his SPREAD and things got a little hairy. Didlit proclaimed that "this sucked!", and I concurred. Near the end of Cave 3, Didlit started with her SPREAD too (in retaliation). After going through all three Cave areas and barely getting any EXP, I decided it was time to show these two chumps what playing with an EXP hog was like and why it sucks...

     > As we entered the Mines, I came ready to burn with a 180% Machine S-Rank SPREAD! Didlit and I gave those two punks ample opportunity to change their ways, but they insisted that a SPREAD was their only weapon (yeah right =/). So we proceeded to fly through the Mines in record time, mowing down all the enemies almost as they appeared. LMAO. At this point, I asked them if they thought this game sucked yet. To which they said, "nope". Hehe. We did the same through all three Ruins areas. For the icing, I left them both for dead in front of Dark Falz, only to see the light again once the orchestra began to play the ending theme...

     > After that, I went up to the Oberon 01-01 lobby and started chatting. I wondered, would I really be turned to the dark side??? LOL. Then I noticed a disturbance in the Force. One which I had not felt in some time... LMAO. I started getting cards from these lonely characters wanting to get a "Taste of Honey"! ^_* One guy, named Cloud (a diff one), kept begging me for a DOUBLE SABER. I finally gave in and donated  a King's Gungnir +99, which was all I had to spare for lowly v.1'er. I had enough of this... So I decided to log off for a while and hopefully return when things were back to normal.

     > Later on that night, I came back to the realm, and briefly saw Paladin and Kitten 3. They were saying goodnight, as it was around 1:30 AM and they were tired.  Blue Heaven was there too so we made a game, which was quickly filled by GTC member Slicer and Izlude (decent friend). We were waltzing through the Forest and had just about reached the Sil Dragon.  I received a simple mail and didn't think much about it, as I was busy using my 12% EXP stealing FLIGHT FAN. When I finally looked at the mail, I thought, who the fokk is this!? It was from a character I did not know, but thankfully the person identified himself at the end of the message... It was none other than ~THE MGX~!!! That disturbance in the Force had come into razor sharp focus! My heart and soul were filled with joy to know that he had returned to the realm. I couldn't believe it, but it was true. Ninjutsu Master, Golden Katana wielder, Strider Hiryu of Capcom fame had returned! And my friends, he was ready to rock!!

     > I asked MGX to get his Ultimate-ready character (Seraphy), make a game, and mail me when he was ready. He did so, and I notified my teammates of my impending departure. I joined Seraphy's game, and he thanked me for the Christmas card I sent him. Merry Christmas wishes were exchanged as well. We quickly caught up on things, while enjoying the Xmas trees and Jingle Bells music playing in the background! Blue Heaven joined us after the other two guys decided to book.

     > After I introduced them to each other, we began talking about PSO, Xbox, and hacking (among other things). MGX said after reading my first two PSO Memories, he had to renew his Hunter's License and live Sega's dream once more. He thanked me for my comments about him, and I replied, "I speak the truth". He said parts of those articles were real tear jerkers, and I agreed while expressing the fact it wasn't the intention. We talked about playing PSO on Gamecube and Xbox, and they hoped that hacking would be solved. Well folks, there isn't anyone in this world, not even Sony or Square, who can snuff out hacking. We all agreed on why hacking is popular, and hoped that Sony wasn't hacking into our game (LMAO) as we brainstormed about ways to improve the realm!

     > Blue and I gave MGX some welcome home gifts in the form of v.2 weapons and armor.  Area: Forest was next. MGX equipped his newly acquired ANGEL WINGS, and said it was a mag he always wished to own. I'm sure that made Blue (the gift giver) feel really good inside. A few minutes into the game, MGX exclaimed something to the effect of, "I had forgotten how awesome PSO is!!" It was like we never missed a beat. We finished the Forest and Toward the Future quest, which was MGX's first experience in ULT Ruins. =) Before I knew it, 5 AM was upon us and I had to get some sleep. We said good-bye and I realized once more the true power of this game...

     > Welcome back MGX/Strider. Thank you Sega and Sonic Team. This was what I play PSO for... the friends... the memories... the interaction... the flashbacks... the comrades... the hardcore gaming discussions... the here and now... the "impossible" coming true! If you know what I mean by the impossible coming true, then you too fill the ranks of MGX and me. ^_*

Good Gaming,
-Shinobi

Shinobi12.06.2001 | PSO Memories v.2 | Index
     > As expected, my first PSO Memories article has been graced with rave reviews.  Not only has it refreshed my memories of the realm, but those who have read it as well.  I'm ready for some more, how about you?  Let's roll baby...

     > Although I had been playing the Japanese version of PSO since mid December 2000, I was in no way prepared for the online experience which was about to begin...  January 31, 2001.  A date which I shall never forget.  I was at Babbage's in time for their UPS delivery of Sega's latest gift to the hardcore gaming community in America.  An entirely new era in replayability was about to begin...  A whole new world was in our future...  Phantasy Star Online was unleashed!

     > ~Playing with gods~  Within the first month of online gaming, I met a Lv42 HUnewearl named Ecstasy.  She proclaimed herself to be a "god" in PSO.  I believed it since I was a weak FOnewm named Necromancer, who was only around Lv18.  We chatted in the lobby of Ariel 10, and exchanged cards when she proposed we begin a game.  While in the game, two more of Ecstasy's friends joined and we chatted by the Check Room for a bit.  All of the sudden, one of her friends started dropping money everywhere!  Ecstasy told me to pick one up so I did.  Then I realized that each one of those meseta packets had 999,999 in them!!  I was like, where did you get all that %#@$&%$ money?!  No one would tell me, but I knew there had to be some code or trick to it.  I begged them to tell me how this was done, but they would not budge.  Of course, now I know her friend had to be one of the first PSO hackers -- most likely a Game Shark user.  Oh well, after that, I never had to worry about money again. =)  I continued to see Ecstasy on an occasional basis until early Summer, when she disappeared from PSO.

     > ~The quest for Geist and Demon's Rayguns~  Being a Force means relying on Techniques to gain experience points.  That's not necessarily bad, as I really enjoy wielding magic.  However, I was always in search of the best handgun I could find, which is the safest way for Force characters to engage the enemy.  One day, Akuto, Lucero and me went through the mines on VHARD.  Vol Opt was short circuited and Akuto found a "???? Raygun".  He tekked it as a Demon's Raygun, which has the most powerful potential attack you can get in a non rare handgun.  It has the ability to cut an enemy's HP to 1/4 in a single hit!  Since Akuto preferred Rifles and Spreads, he offered the Demon's Raygun to me, and I graciously accepted.  I used it often, and immediately became enthralled with it's vast abilities (for a handgun anyway).  At some point thereafter, I found the most highly valued Force handgun -- a Geist Raygun!  Why is it so important?  Simple.  Its special attack steals 6% of the user's TP, and adds that value to your TP.  This translates into rarely, if ever, needing to go shopping for fluids!  Obviously a Force wielding a Geist Raygun has unstoppable technique usage at his/her disposal.  =)  But the joy would be tempered with a new, unknown enemy...

     > One day I was in an open game with Lucero and two new players.  We were fighting De Rol Le and he shot me with his energy orbs, which easily killed my Force.  Unfortunately for me, this was my first experience with what became known as BSOD/FSOD (black/frozen screen of death) -- the NEW enemy of many PSO players.  I died and was unable to pick my weapon up!  A few seconds later the screen went black and the game appeared to crash (and it did)!!!  I turned the power off and restarted, not thinking much of the occurrence.  When I got back into the game and checked my inventory, the Demon's Raygun was still gone.  I asked Lucero and the other two guys if they picked it up, and they said there was nothing there!  My prized possession was gone forever, along with everything else I didn't have equipped at the time.  =(  This was only the beginning, as I would eventually lose at least three more all important Rayguns to BSOD, including a highly sought after Geist Raygun.  It would be a long time before I found another Geist and Demon's Rayguns.  Sure I would occasionally find the lesser Heart, Mind, Soul, and Devil's Rayguns, but they could not replace what I had lost.  This was the source of much frustration, and eventually led to my purchase of a Game Shark...

     > ~Psychology at its best~  Once I got in the Lv70's with Necromancer, I was ready for a new character.  After all, we all know Force characters can't attack or defend worth $&!#.  For crying out loud, when I finally got to VHARD at Lv40, I was lucky to do 75 points damage with a hard attack!  After some thorough consideration, I came up with the idea to create a babe.  Thanks in part to Temptress' influence, I decided on the name Seductress.  Since I wanted to make a babe, a HUnewearl was the only real character class available.  Next, I needed a "look" that could live up to the name, and future reputation!  LOL.  I remembered a hot HUnni a played with a few times named Valentine.  She wore the red outfit with long, sandy brown hair.  That was it!  Seductress got the red clothes with long wavy blonde hair (to match my wife's).  Squall thought I was weird for creating a babe.  That is until I explained part of the reason behind it.  You see, since I never found anything really good, and didn't have a Game Shark (yet), I needed to have a way to get sweet weapons.  I figured Seductress could easily convince other gamers that a few weapons were disposable from their inventory!  =)  Squall, Lucero, and me played it up, and it worked big time!!

     > Actually, Seductress soon became my favorite character, as I had a lot of fun role playing with her.  For instance, I would warp into a crowded lobby and almost instantly be bombarded with cards!  LOL.  I loved the attention.  Some guys would invariably assume I was a woman, even though I would gladly set them straight whenever they asked.   There was one guy (a short HUmar) that kept interrupting Squall and me while chatting in a lobby.  I finally got pissed and said, "buzz off shrimp, before I waste you!!"  LMAO.  That wasn't all I liked about HUnni's.  I soon discovered that their combination of attack, defense, evasion, techniques, and sheer speed was perfect!  Give me a DOUBLE SABER and a God/Battle, and I could go through Forest to Falz without shopping!!  In the early days, I could often be quoted as asking, "did I ever tell you?"  To which Lucero would bite, hook, line, and sinker, "what???"  And I would reply, "HUnewearls ROCK!!"  ^_*

     > ~My first experience with the power of Heaven~  Lucero and I were in an open game playing through the caves at the time.  A RAcaseal, whose name escapes me, joined the game and we piped her down.  Everything was going along normally until I noticed that every now and then a mysterious rain of death would come from the heavens.  Neither one of us had any idea who was doing it, or where it was coming from.  Monsters would cower before the purple rays of certain death which seemed to emanate from the skies above.  The RAcaseal was wielding what appeared to be a mere handgun.  I finally asked her what she was using, and she replied, "a HEAVEN PUNISHER".  I asked if it was the source of this amazing attack, which was similar to one of Dark Falz's, and she confirmed it.  Both Lucero and me were astonished that such a harmless looking handgun could unleash such heavenly punishment!  We set out to acquire this immense power...

     > Within a week's time, I ran into someone that was willing to trade his HEAVEN PUNISHER.  I honestly can't remember what I gave him for it, but I do remember that it wasn't worth much.  Obviously since I was using Seductress, that had a role to play in the transaction.  =)  He had nothing to lose anyway, because I'm sure he either made that weapon, or knew someone that could.  There was only one problem...  My two current characters (Necromancer and Seductress) were unable to equip this Ranger-only weapon.  But I knew who could -- my best PSO friend, Lucero!  The next time I saw him, he was presented with a gift from heaven.  We played through the forest and.... NOTHING!!!  The HEAVEN PUNISHER did not punish!!!  Now, I remembered the guy who traded it to me said it would only work at certain times, which I didn't really comprehend.  I was beginning to wonder if this was a hacked weapon without the main ingredients.  LOL.  Anyway, we kept trying and eventually realized that it only worked on alternate even 100 PSO time beats.  At this point, I needed a new character -- a Ranger!  I came up with the name Synbios (Japanese spelling), which I got from the main hero of Shining Force III ~Scenario 1~.  This new RAmar dressed in the red outfit with brown hair became my third character.  Thanks to Seductress' influence, we easily acquired another HEAVEN PUNISHER.  Lucero and I spent many nights in anticipation, then execution of duel punishment from above!!!

     > ~Spreading misery made it fair~  At this time, early Spring, Game Shark created weapons were still relatively new in the realm.  Being RAmars with relatively weak defense, Lucero and Synbios (me) weren't exactly able to waltz through the ruins on our own in VHARD.  We saw a new weapon though, which had no problem cutting down the enemy.  Akuto was the first player I knew to acquire a SPREAD NEEDLE.  He often asked if it bothered me when he used it, to which I always replied "no".  I never understood his concern over the matter, and he never understood why I was so "stupid".  You see, he thought using a SPREAD NEEDLE kept me from getting experience.  I knew that all I needed to do was damage the enemy, and I would still receive experience for their death.  Once I explained this to him, he felt much better.  Anyway, Lucero had a friend (whose name escapes me) with extra SPREADS (duped, I'm sure).  We joined his game and he dropped two SPREADS -- one for Lucero and one for Synbios.  The only % on the weapon was a -15% for Altered Beasts.

     > From that point on, we had no trouble leveling, and making a lot of people angry at us, especially since most people didn't seem to know why techniques were useful.  LMAO.  Playing as Necromancer, I preferred that at least one person use a SPREAD in the ruins to paralyze the enemies.  This made it easy to tech and pick them off with a Raygun.  Also, when we (as Lucero and Synbios) reached the once dreaded ruins, Delsabers, Chaos Sorcerers, and the like would be dealt with quickly and efficiently!  Fear of the Dark became confidence in the Dark!  On the other hand, surviving Dark Falz's swipe was a whole different story.  But we agreed that SPREAD NEEDLES made VHARD difficulty fair for weak characters!  =)

     > ~PSO is contagious~  By late Spring, I was off the road again and able to spend some more time on PSO.  We had two TV's in our family room so that I could play PSO, and my wife could watch TV.  She saw how much fun I was having and decided that we needed another Dreamcast, keyboard, PSO game, and ISP.  Mind you, my wife has never played videogames, nor been interested in them at all.  We bought all that and I made a voluptuous Lv100 HUnewearl named Angel for her using my recently purchased Game Shark.  Of course I supplied her with all the necessary weapons, armor, and units she would need to survive in the realm.  Next, a crash course in PSO control, which was enough to drive me (the perfectionist) $%*&@%$ crazy!!  Anyway, she eventually learned enough to join us and live Sega's online dream.  Even at Lv100, she died often (like most women -- LOL/JK), and got lost a lot.  =)  Although she didn't play very long (a few weeks), it was quite an achievement for me to get her into playing a videogame.  Angel still exists on my wife's Dreamcast and VMU, but I rarely have the occasion to use her.  We were the first simultaneous husband and wife PSO team that I know of.  As you know, Paladin and Bambie also fit that description, except they're team still exists on a nightly basis...

     > You know, as much as I've written about PSO in these two articles, it truly only scratches the surface of my entire experience in the realm.  I don't know if this experience can ever be surpassed by a future game, but one thing is for sure.  Sonic Team's achievement will always have a special place in my memory and heart.  If you haven't been touched by Sega's dream, then you have missed a hardcore gamer's delight which is unparalleled...

Good Gaming,
-Shinobi

Shinobi12.04.2001 | PSO Memories v.1 | Index
     > Last night I was struck by sadness when a long time PSO player, Siggy/Sugar-Chan (HUmar/HUnewearl), announced his departure from the PSO realm for at least until Christmas, and maybe longer (possibly 3 months).  As a result of this sobering news, I felt compelled to reminisce about some of the good times and people I've come to know and cherish.  It brought to mind all the 100's of hours I've spent on Sonic Team's ubergame.  I have made many new friends over the last 10 months, and solidified many old relationships.  PSO is yet another example of Sega being at the forefront of technology, and me being there to savor it...

     > My first character was Necromancer (FOnewm), who was initially dressed in the the black outfit with red spikey hair, and later changed to the standard red attire.  The first two people I got to know in PSO were Lucero (RAmar) and Akuto (RAmar).  At the time, I was mostly playing on weekends, and these two guys always seemed to be on at the same time as me.  We met and played on Ariel 10-01, which eventually became our guild headquarters.  Another friend I played a lot with early on was Temptress, a very cool FOnewearl.  She became part of the inspiration for my first female character, Seductress (HUnewearl).  All three of us were completely immersed in the wonders of PSO, and we had no idea what lay before us.  I can remember going into the Mines for the first few times (on normal difficulty) and thinking this is so hard!  The Sinow Beats were amazingly tough at first, but teamwork and perseverance paid off.  Then one day Akuto and I finally got to Dark Falz.  I can remember being nervous -- even more so after finding out he could kill me at will.  We finally did beat him, and we found our first rare -- a PHOTON CLAW.  Temptress played through early Spring, Akuto continued on until late Spring, and Lucero played through early October, when he was no longer able to regularly connect with his ISP.

     > The next two major players I met were Abdiel (HUmar) and Squall (HUmar).  To be honest, I never considered Abdiel to be a good friend until much later.  As for Squall, we hit it right from the git-go.  We had a lot of good times.  If I recall correctly, I met Squall when he was around level 22 and I was around 32.  It seemed as though he always remained about 10 levels behind me.  For the record, the Squall I'm talking about was surely one of the first ones on PSO (if not the first), as copy cat characters popped up like weeds soon thereafter.  Abdiel kind of faded from the my scene until some time in the Summer, while Squall went through a period of absence, since he had no dial-up ISP.

     > About this time, mid Spring, Lucero and I decided to make an official PSO Guild, otherwise known as a clan.  Lucero already had his own guild, called "Gleaming the Cube"  (GTC).  I had a selection of friends I always played with when Lucero wasn't around, so we essentially decided that GTC wasn't big enough for both of us.  I came up with the idea that we could form a single guild with two wings.  Lucero would lead the GTC wing, and I could lead my own wing, which became the Shin Force Guild.  He loved the idea and said, "I like the way you think".  That solidified our friendship and we were rarely seen in separate games for too long.  Also, the quest for new members had begun.

     > Sephiroth (HUmar), Neifirst (HUnewearl), and Ash Soprano/King Mob (RAmar/HUmar) were the next major friends I made.  I met Sephiroth and Ash through Lucero, as he always seemed to have more friends than me.  We enjoyed PSO through level 100 together, and they became GTC members.  I was on my third Lv100 with Seductress being #2 and Synbios (RAmar) being #3.  Sephiroth faded away around May, as his sister basically took over PSO in their house, and his enthusiasm for the game dropped off.  Ash, who eventually became a GTC Guild member, provided us with many hours of friendship on PSO up until as recently as a few weeks ago.  It was reported to me that King Mob was NOL'ed, and I haven't seen him since.  For the record, NOL'ed in his case meant that his character was converted to a Lv155 HUnewearl named "NOL".  Neifirst was a great looking HUnewearl who inspired me to create Mieu (HUnewearl), another Phantasy Star character.  He played mostly late at night or early mornings because of his weird hours at work.  He eventually created his own clan which consisted of characters relating to the Phantasy Star realm.  I haven't seen him lately, but I know he doesn't plan to get v2 until the Gamecube version arrives.

     > Next I met three ladies, one of which I became great friends with.  Shadow (FOmarl) and Katrianna (HUnewearl) were introduced to me via Ash.  I thought it was really cool to see women playing games, which most people think only men are interested in.  We played a lot for a few months, then Shadow and Katrianna faded away for a while.  Recently, I spent some time with Katrianna (just as she converted to v2), but I fear that she is having trouble connecting. =/  The third was Echidna.  I met her in a open game sometime in April (I think), while I was playing as my newest character, Mieu.  I was around Lv67 while she was around Lv62.  Our characters were almost twins!  We played on and off for a few months, and I even got to be friends with her husband, Zero/-D- (HUmar/HUcast), who loved to play on the Japanese ships.  Then something happened, which caused us to spend more time together.  I can't site a specific event or reason for this, other than fate.  Echidna and I became great friends and got to know one another pretty well.  I eventually asked her to join our Guild, and she accepted.  She was immediately promoted to second in command and given the rank "Ninjitsu HUnniwearl", which to this day is hers alone.  To date, other than Lucero, Echidna is the person I've spent the most time with on PSO.  She hasn't been seen by me for about three weeks now, and sources say she has lost interest in the game.  I truly cherish the many good times we had in the realm...

     > Long time Shin Force visitors know the name Metal Gear X (MGX) from the message board.  Through Sega Force and Shin Force, I've known Strider since 1997.  Well, he was the next person to join the PSO realm, and our guild.  His first character was Strider (RAmar), but his eventual favorite was the v2 HUnewearl known as Seraphy.  I was overjoyed when he decided to join the fun.  Unfortunately, he was never able to spend a lot of time playing, but we still managed to strengthen our friendship and enjoy Sega online gaming (as it was never supposed to happen).  He recently told me of his lack of interest (in PSO) and time, which has essentially closed the book on his chapter in PSO.  To this day, I regard him as one of my best friends, even though we have never met face to face... yet.

     > More women were on the horizon as a casual friend of mine, Harlot (HUnewearl), introduced Lucero and me to Syfte/Larynn (HUnewearl) and Miss Thang (HUnewearl).  We immediately became friends and played a lot for a while.  Syfte was the first person in my circle of friends to get the Japanese PSO v2.  She dogged me for weeks to get my v2 online, but I was in no hurry, as I knew how difficult it was to obtain a Dricas account.  Miss Thang and I eventually convinced her to do the legwork for me, as she had done the hard part for herself, and getting me a Dricas account would be relatively simple for her.  I was very thankful to her and made my PSO v2 online debut on July 3, 2001.  Shortly after that, Lucero also made his v2 debut as Candy (HUnewearl), and Squall returned to PSO in v2 form as well.  Squall was then announced to be second in command of GTC -- a title which he holds dearly.  For whatever reason, Syfte, "Missy" and me never played much after that, but I have fond memories of our times together.  Both of them recently logged off PSO (for Dreamcast) for the last time.

     > Somewhere in the same time frame, I met Rydon/Paladin (RAmar/HUmar).  Initially, we never really played that much, but he eventually became a Shin Force member along with his wife, Bambie (HUnewearl).  One of the funniest stories Paladin told me was when I (as Seductress) once saw him in a lobby with his wife.  He said, "hya Seductress"!  As the story goes, his wife became a little concerned that he was associating with some one named Seductress, maybe even a tad bit jealous...ROFLMAO.  One of the most interesting things about this couple is that Bambie is the one that got Paladin into playing PSO.  Obviously, this goes against all conventional wisdom.  Anyway, Paladin and Bambie have been very good friends, and the source of much pleasure in the realm.  I still see them almost every day.  =)

     > Still around late Spring, early Summer, I ran into two more long time Shin Force friends, Julian (RAmar; aka Valder) and his wife Jocelyn (HUnewearl).  They make a great tag team as Julian usually takes the early to late evening hours, while Jocelyn consumes the late night gaming sessions like a pro!  One of my favorite memories with Julian was when I gave him his first HEAVEN PUNISHER, which allows one to wield "heaven's almighty punishment".  His sheer amazement of its immense power was something I'll never forget (and is totally understood by all who witness it).  One of my favorite memories with Jocelyn was when I used a chat symbol of a nude woman (that I got from Echidna) and she told me to "stop showing those baby feeders"!!  That was the first time both Echidna and me had ever heard that reference to breasts, and we laughed our asses off!  =)  Both Julian and Jocelyn are devoted Sega gamers, which makes them people after my own heart.  =)  The only hitch in our gaming together was the short period of time when we couldn't see each other move!  I eventually corrected that by using my alternate dial-up ISP.  They are both highly valued Shin Force members that I see on a fairly regular basis...

     > At some point this past Summer I met Zack (HUmar), the supreme leader of the Rabishun Clan.  At the time, I had a HUnewearl named Masqurin, who has since been replaced by Kasumi Ninja (HUnewearl).  Anyway, Zack promised he could get me a sweet DOUBLE SABER, and he surely came through.  He introduced me to many of his members, including Azriel (FOmarl), Nathaniel (RAmar), and Norrin Radd (HUmar).  Zack often told me of his clan's enjoyment of getting high, which was the source of many jokes in the interim.  Azriel has been offline for a while now, and Zack has recently logged off for good (well, until PSO Xbox arrives).  I still see Nathaniel occasionally, and Norrin quite often.  I also started playing a lot more with Abdiel (remember him?), and he quickly became a highly respected Shin Force member.  Abdiel and I love to joke about the fact that he dies a lot, whereas I never die!  LOL.  I recently gained much pleasure in giving him a FLAME GARMENT so that he could shed his PARASITE WEAR forever!!  Much to my dismay, I only see him on weekends these days...

     > In late Summer, I hooked up with [www.synbios.net]'s webmaster, known as Parn (HUmar).  He is a diehard gamer like me, and our limited time together in the realm has been quite enjoyable. I also met his sister, the "real" Masqurin (HUnewearl) right after him.  We have played on and off for the past few months, which have been highlighted by her uncanny ability to restart her character as a result of corrupted files.  Through all those restarts, she even managed to gain Shin Force membership.  =)  Masqurin also generously provided us with hand-drawn pix of various PSO people we know.  Most unfortunately, I recently found out her days on PSO are numbered, as her family is switching to DSL. =(  Parn remains online, as he doesn't live at home anymore.

     > Within recent months, I ran into a person I've seen quite often on Ariel 10.  Her name is Blumchen (HUnewearl), and she is a former member of a clan (sorry, I don't know its name) which also resided at Ariel 10, until it was disbanded.  We talked and decided that Shin Force membership was right for her.  Siggy, whose PSO departure last night inspired this article, is a long time friend of Blumchen's.  They're both late night gamers, like me.  =)  My highlight with her in our relatively short time, would be the high score of 188% in the "Love Test".  I think I speak for both of us when I say that was FUN!  I see her on a regular basis to this day.  =)

     > This Fall, before Lucero/Candy started having problems connecting, he befriended a HUcast named Cloud and added him to the ranks of the GTC.  Cloud has been a good friend to me, and has essentially taken over the once expansive GTC guild, if for no other reason than default on Candy's and Squall's part.  =/  I sincerely hope to see Candy and Squall on a regular basis again -- soon.  Cloud has even contributed reviews to Shin Force, as he expands his responsibilities.  The Cloudster also brought in a new member named White Knight (RAmar), who has turned out to be a very well trained "area clearer".  As of this writing, Cloud and White Knight are the only two active players left in the GTC wing.

     > Although we got off to a rocky start, Blue Heaven (HUmar) has persevered and gained a spot in the Shin Force Guild.  He was first introduced to me by Echidna this past Summer.  Initially, I didn't enjoy his attitude or gameplay manners.  In my opinion, Blue has since "seen the light", and has truly earned his membership.  He has been a good friend, a great teammate, and provided a great sense of humor for all to enjoy.  Finally, Blue has mastered the Code of the Shinobi, and now wields the Shin Force!  =)

     > One thing is for sure.  PSO is a wonderful experience that only online participants can truly appreciate.  I often think about Sega's groundbreaking achievement while I'm playing.  The scope of the game, and the magnitude of your interaction are awe inspiring.  Anyway, there is no way I could remember all the people I enjoyed playing with in one sitting.  Therefore, I plan to author additional editorials on this subject as necessary.  I also wanted to have a small log of this once in a lifetime experience, brought to you and me exclusively by Sega, utilizing Sega created software AND hardware.  I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I did writing it.

     > As expected, the videogame media has accepted Sega's decision to morph into a third party publisher with open arms. If they didn't, the last three years of wishing would have been a waste (for the media). This subject has surely been beaten to death by now -- but I still want to weigh in with another hardcore gamer's view.

     > Most unfortunately, hardcore gamers aren't numerous enough to guide the videogame industry anymore. We can thank mainstream companies for massively expanding the number of casual gamers over the last six years. It's our loss (the hardcore gamer), and their gain (the casual gamer).

     > So is Sega's new direction a reason for celebration? I don't think so. The reasons for this transformation are surely logical and will probably boost Sega into profits sooner, rather than later. Obviously, I can appreciate the merit of Sega's new identity. That doesn't mean, however, I have to like their new direction, as I would prefer the "complete Sega".

     > Just when the Dreamcast was really picking up steam in America and Europe, the Japanese market sealed its fate!  Dreamcast is still the fastest selling console in US history, and the number one console in Europe (during 2000 Holiday season)!  Unfortunately, that's not good enough in this day and age. I'm still in shock that awesome games like Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, Grandia II, Sega GT, Sonic Adventure, Dead or Alive 2, Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, and many more were not enough to earn Sega a profit.

     > This January, hardcore gamers were introduced to the latest in a long line of Sega wonders -- Phantasy Star Online! My gosh, this game is so addictive, unique, relaxing, intriguing, interactive, interesting, fun, open-ended, and playable! Sega promised an awesome online experience, and they have delivered! I regret to say that a disturbing conclusion has become evident.

     > Games no longer make a system -- pop culture (unfortunately) does make a system! Let's face it -- hardcore is going out, and casual has taken control. It's a demoralizing time in videogame history for many Sega Fans, including myself. As far as I'm concerned, the only bright side to this fiasco is the prospect of future profits for Sega....

     > I am disheartened to learn that Sega plans to "focus on software" and "consider publishing for Sony and Nintendo".  This emotion has nothing to do with my opinion of Sony or Nintendo.  [As a reminder, I'm the PROUD owner of thousands of dollars worth of Sony and Nintendo electronics.]  You see, I have always viewed Sega as a complete company, from research to hardware and software development.  After all, they're name is SErvice and GAmes (not just GAmes).

     > Obviously, Sega is evolving as their current situation demands.  I know this may come as news to some people, but Sega would like to make money.  You may remember that when Saturn was in its last year of current releases here, Sega lost lots of money while providing loyal Saturn owners with Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III, and other games.  People bitched and whined because Sega did what they had to do, partially as a result of the American public's lack of support.  This time it's the other way around.  Sega is doing well here, while that can't be said for the Japanese market.  So they want to change focus, at least in Japan.

     > Who knows, if the notion of third party Dreamcast technology catches on, then maybe the Uberconsole has a lengthy future of new releases.  If not, then Dreamcast may not see games beyond March 2002.  A very sad possibility.  Would that be the end of new Sega hardware forever???  Could it be the demise of Sega?

     > I hope not.  Sega has always been the complete company...  Throughout my gaming life (over 20 years), I've played Sega software on Sega hardware.  They go hand and hand, like the main CPU in  a robot; or fuel in a car; or furniture in a home.  I've watched in awe as Sega continually pushed the technology curve in hardware AND software.  Can Sega retain greatness merely as a software publisher?  Would they become much like Capcom? Can they pull back, regain strength, and emerge as a complete company (once more) sometime in the future?  Is that even in the cards??

     > Gosh, we already lost SNK in the last year. You know.... it's a sad time in the video game industry when Sega, who is touted as being an awesome developer, can't make a profit.  It's kind of like Harley Davidson.  Nobody wanted to see them go by the wayside -- they were rejuvenated.  What will I do if new Sega hardware never arrives again?  I just don't know.... This is definitely a dark time for the Force.  When things are more clear, maybe I'll see my way through this mess........
