Shinobi10.25.2003 | Earthshaker - take 3 | Index
Hi,

Thanks for posting the Earthshaker reviews on your website. I've known of the band for a while but have never picked up any of their releases. Judging by your reviews I'm missing out on great Japanese metal. I've been collecting Japanese imports from for years. Have you listened to X-Ray? I'm curious to know what they are like.

Thanks,
-Jim Ledwith

Jim,

Your judgement of my opinion regarding Earthshaker is 100% correct.  Any one of their first four albums would be an excellent addition to anyone's metal collection.

No, I've not heard of X-Ray.  However, here are some other Japanese metal bands I would recommend: Loudness, EZO, and Anthem (in order of preference).

Thanks,
-Shinobi

Hey, good to hear back from you.

Yeah, I love what Earthshaker do and have done. I've seen in concert more than once and they are great!

Well, albums to recommend. Tough one. I think Fugitive and Midnight Flight are two of the best five they have done. Since then:

Passion:
Began to sound a bit more commercial, but some really good rocking stuff. "The Night We Had" is phenomenal, never heard anything like it, the album is worth getting just for that song! RECOMMENDED.

Live In Budokan
Excellent live album, most of the great songs. Occasionally sounds a little "light" as when Shara starts soloing there is only the bass keeping the sound up, but a fantastic live album. RECOMMENDED.

Overrun:
Keyboards introduced big time and they went commercial. Imagine the more commercial numbers on midnight flight with keyboards. Three or four very nice, catchy, singalong numbers. I like the album a lot, but if you want "fugitive" and no keyboards then leave it.

Aftershock
Now they added a permanent keyboard player to the lineup, Toshi. They kinda lost direction a bit here, two or three good songs but no great ones. Missable.

Smash:
A mixed album; one or two fantastic songs (Pierrot), several mediocre. Unfortunately Pierrot is not on any greatest hits or live album. So-So.

Treachery
Very interesting as they started experimenting with sequencers, with some interesting results. Three great songs and another two good ones. The first three tracks all work fantastically, then it meanders until "Criminal" which is quite beautiful, with a solo on acoustic guitar. There is a real change in guitar style though, less tuneful and more technical and experimental, as a Shara fan it took some gettig used to! RECOMMENDED.

Pretty Good
They went back to basics, toned down the keyboard, and this was rather disappointing. One catchy number, one good time rock (like "Drive Me Crazy") and the rest is forgetable.

Earthshaker
Keyboards toned down even more, mostly mid tempo riff oriented songs. The guitar work is great, very raw and gutsy, but the songs are a bit samey, they lack catchy hooks and choruses, you feel Marcy isn't trying. Poison is a good catchy number with fantastic guitar, there's a couple of very atmospheric numbers.... a change of influence. Good but not Fugitive!

Real
Their heaviest ever. Opens with a 200mph belter, all in English, followed by the incredibly sinister Labyrinth. A couple of other very memorable songs, RECOMMENDED.

Yesterday and Tomorrow
All their most popular tracks of the past decade rerecorded, some very differently from the original. Good but not great.

More
A couple of new songs, then a recording of a live gig in Vancouver. New songs are not worth the album, so worth getting once you have caught up!

Birthday
The reunion album, back as a foursome. OK but not great.

Earthshaker Type A
Again the old hits rerecorded. Better than the last time they did this, and a better choice of material ! Sound wise they are quite close to Fugitive again.

Unknown (title is in Japanese)
Their latest, very good, similar  sound to fugitive, but still very different, some experimental stuff. RECOMMENDED.

So that's it... hope it helps. If you like Fugitive, I would say the top three to get would be LIVE IN BUDOKAN.....REAL....and the newest one. If you want to hear them do something different, TREACHERY.  All have some great songs.

This is their website:

Dougie,

Thanks for the information. I have many of those already, and I am currently procuring 'Overrun'.  I've never seen Earthshaker in concert, though I surely would enjoy it greatly.  You seem to be quite the Earthshaker expert, and it's a pleasure to read your synopsis of the band's albums.  I was wondering if you're a fan of Loudness, EZO, or Anthem as well?

Thanks,
-Shinobi

Hi,

I just came across your reviews of Earthshaker's first three albums. I wanted to say great reviews, you do them justice and you echoed my feelings. I love the band, they did another 8 or 9 albums after Midnight Flight then broke up, but got back together a couple of years ago and have released three more since. Of course some are better than others, they went more commercial, added keyboards, experimented with sequencers, went back to basics and are now back quite close to "Fugitive" style and sound.

In 15 years I've only met one other english-speaking person who knows and likes Earthshaker, so I just wanted to say "hello".

Cheers,
-Dougie

Dougie,

Thanks for the praise. I really like Earthshaker a lot and it's nice to know I'm reaching their fans with Shinforce. You say some of their latest music is Fugitive style? I wonder if you could recommend one or two of their latest releases to me so that I might purchase them.

Thanks and rock on,
-Shinobi

Hey,

You know I remember a time when Shinforce didn't exist and Sega Force was one of the few good sources for Sega news and information.  Then with Sega's failing systems, your site slowed down content.

I miss the time when Shinforce was new and swarmed gamers with news bits and other stuff.  I was a cool time for gaming.  But it seems that ever since gaming went main stream, hardcore gamers are left in the dark.  And believe it or not, you're one of the last sites that posts news/reviews for older systems.  And believe me, people read it.  There's just no easy way to find you guys since search engines are pumped with porn and fake pages that lead to ads.

But all I can really say is 'thanks' for keeping up the Sega fan site.  Most sites only care about money (IGN.COM) and don't give a witches tit about people trying to check out older games.  Plus, I wanted to ask you if you might want some help redesigning your site, since it's been a while and the heavy amount of content makes it kinda hard for newbs to get around.  Also, how come you guys don't make ALL-TIME TOP TEN lists or TOP TEN SHOOTERS or anything like that.  I liked hearing you guys reccomend games that I've never heard of (I heard about Snatcher HERE FIRST).  You, Cloud and Jocelyn; are some of 1 in 1,000,000 that know that game graphics don't matter when it come to great games.  Or else we'd all play Xbox.

Sincerely,
-David Hernandez

David,

There's no doubt, ever since Mega Drive/Genesis, Sega system's commercial performance has been beneath their software/hardware prowess.  The reason for Sega/Shin Force's existence, however, has only to do with my (now) 20+ years of appreciation for Sega's hardware/software.  Sure it might be fantastic for Sega to be as successful as Sony or EA -- but would they be the same company?

I've striven to maintain a highly compatible website that loads quickly.  When it's all said and done, I believe the web browsing public is interested in a quick loading site with concise information and just enough images to get the point across.  To that end I think Sega/Shin Force has done its job.  Of course, I'm always open to suggestions.

Happy gaming,
-Shinobi
