> Gears of War is an impressive looking third person shooter
placing players in a gritty near-future sci-fi setting to rival that of
Halo mixed in with a tinge of horror. An alien invasion storyline and AI-controlled
allies make players feel like a part of a larger battle much like Halo
does, so you'll have all the incentive you need to blast away endlessly
at your alien foes while on your journey to the end. From what I gather,
hellish aliens called locust beasts that have an aversion to the light
of day and hide in the darkness have launched a full scale invasion of
Earth, and you, playing as a member of the heavily armed delta squad, must
battle the invaders across worn-torn landscapes littered with the skeletal
remnants of buildings in a bid to rid the world of them once and for all.
Like Resident Evil 4 and the under-rated Cold Fear,
players aim and fire from an over-the-shoulder perspective (technically
known as a second person perspective) to better immerse you in the heat
of the action. Smart AI will mean that attempting to shoot at enemies in
the open during a firefight will quickly be the death of you just like
in a real firefight, meaning you'll be spending a lot of time firing from
behind cover if you hope to survive when locust beasts swarm you in all
directions from the shadows. In order to provide a suitable challenge,
these viscous creatures will be taking cover, too, even when their cover
is destroyed by weapons' fire.
> Normal mapping, a process by which the surfaces of real life locations
are photographed and transferred to a game (the same next gen texturing
technique used in Condemned),
help the game's environments come to life with a sense of grittiness, also
increasing the game's immersive potential. Levels will be streamed in from
the game disk to eliminate loading screens completely, and the developers
at Epic Games plan to include co-operative play to make another
player a part of the fun as well as multi-player online death-matches (naturally).
Needless to say, this is a game Xbox 360 owners should keep
a very close eye on. Although high-definition TV support will come as standard
in all 360 titles, this game promises to look truly next gen even on an
ordinary TV set by having high res. graphics and a soaring sky high frame
rate. |

> The developers at Epic Games have brought their extensive
experience (gained by honing their development skills for years on the
PC) to the Xbox 360 to bring game fans what appears to be
one of the finest looking next generation games yet (this is one of the
advantages of the Xbox 360 sharing the same operating environment
as PCs). Even early screenshots and trailers show that Gears of War
is jam-packed with detail. These visuals are the fruits of the creators
making the most out of their very own Unreal 3 graphics engine
(which many publishers have since liscenced including Sega
and Sony). And this is just the beginning; who knows what
we'll be seeing just around the corner in a few years from now?
> With real-time game graphics reaching new highs like these, would it
really be worth waiting for the Playstation 3 even if it
was more powerful (which it isn't, btw)? The Xbox 360 has
more than enough horsepower under its hood to keep us far away from the
realm of boredom for many years. I can't see how anyone couldn't be impressed
with the ultra-realistic graphics seen in this game. I really can't. |
