Shin Force ~ The All Sega Site ~
 Game Awards > 2000
Arcade Game of the Year
  1. Dead or Alive 2 | Tecmo | Team Ninja | You can't go wrong with this arcade translation.  It's the current overall Dreamcast fighter champion as well.
  2. Crazy Taxi | Sega | Hit Maker (AM3) | Pure and simple driving fun!  Do whatever it takes to deliver your passengers in a timely manner.
  3. Virtual-On ~Oratorio Tangram~  | Sega | Hit Maker (AM3) | An awesome, original arena fighter makes it's way to the Uberconsole from Model 3.
Action Game of the Year
  1. Jet Set Radio / Jet Grind Radio | Sega | Smilebit | This original inline skating game has the graphics, gameplay and action gamers desire.
  2. Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future | Sega | Appaloosa | Who could deny the return of everyone's favorite dolphin hero, especially when you add the power of Dreamcast?
  3. Tony Hawk's Pro SKater 2 | Activision | Treyarch | The first broke open the gates for skateboarding games.  The sequel shatters all the competition.
Action/Fighting Game of the Year
  1. Quake III Arena | Sega | This game features non stop action with great looks and control, especially with a mouse and keyboard.  Add smooth online play for the icing on the cake!
  2. Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage | Eidos | Yukes | This anime based game isn't too deep, but the blood and guts gameplay sure is fun.
  3. Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm | Crave | Treyarch | Don't write this game off before you've completed a few levels.  I think it is thouroughly enjoyable, especially once you get the hang of the fighting scheme.
Action/Adventure Game of the Year
  1. Rayman 2: The Great Escape | Ubi Soft | This is a top notch mascot game from start to finish.  The Saturn original was great...  this one is awesome!
  2. Maken X | Sega | Atlus | Take on demonic enemies with a sword that's alive!  Awesome graphics and gameplay to boot.  MDK2 is better in some respects, but it's too hard.
  3. Max Steel: Covert Missions | Mattel | Treyarch | TV shows usually stink as video games.  Not so with this game.  Straight forward, fun action awaits your controller.
3D Fighting Game of the Year
  1. Dead or Alive 2 | Tecmo | Team Ninja | Quite simply the breast fighter you can buy.
  2. Ultimate Fighting Championship | Crave | This is the coolest wrestling/fighter I've ever played.
  3. Power Stone 2 | Capcom | I liked the first one.  The sequel blows it away in every respect.  Four player mayhem adds a new dimension.
2D Fighting Game of the Year
  1. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 | Capcom | Another totally sweet versus fighter straight from Naomi to Dreamcast.
  2. Guilty Gear X | Sammy | Arc System | A marvelous weapons fighter with lots of moves, and graphics to die for.
  3. King of Fighters 99 Evolution | SNK | Classic gameplay and enhanced graphics make this the best of the series.
Etc. Game of the Year
  1. Sonic Shuffle | Sega | You want a decent party game with cell animation?  Look no further.
  2. Maximum Pool | Sierra | Digital pool isn't as fun as the real thing, but the online mode is a plus.
  3. Hoyle Casino | Berkeley Systems | This isn't as good as the real thing either, but at least you won't go to the poor house when you're done.
Survival Game of the Year
  1. Resident Evil: Code Veronica | Capcom | I'm not really into this genre all too much, but I can appreciate a good game when I play it.
  2. D2 | Sega | Warp | I prefer the gameplay of Warp's masterpiece over RE.  However, its graphics and story line are a notch down from RE:CV.
  3. Resident Evil 3 | Capcom | Again, I'm not a big fan, but this game is better than Carrier.
Sim Racing Game of the Year
  1. Sega GT ~Homologation Special~ | Sega | This category was hard because all the candidates are very similar in quality.  I picked this game as the best because it's the one I spent the most time playing (by far).
  2. Test Drive Le Mans | Infogrames | Melbourne House | Totally awesome graphics and gameplay.  Lots of variety and attainable challenges await.
  3. F355 Challenge | Sega | AM2 | This game takes many hours to master, and it's worth the effort.  Since you can only drive the F355, I made it third on this list.
Arcade Racing Game of the Year
  1. Shutokou Battle 2 / Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 | Crave | Genki | Take the first TXR, add way more track, more cars, better gameplay, and better graphics and you get this sweet game.
  2. Daytona USA 2001 | Sega | Amusement Vision | The original game is updated with better looks, more cars, new tracks, and online play.
  3. Vanishing Point | Acclaim  | Clockwork Games | Way better (in every way) than I could ever imagine an Acclaim release would be.
3D Shooting Game of the Year
  1. Quake III Arena | Sega | All I can say is, "get the BFG".
  2. Rainbow Cotton | Success | Nice graphics, somewhat original gameplay, and Cotton cuteness.
  3. Star Wars Demolition | Lucas Arts | Drop Vigilante 8 into the Star Wars realm for a great vehicle/shooter.
2D Shooting Game of the Year
  1. GigaWing | Capcom | Old-school shooting fun with to much stuff to blow up.
  2. Gunbird 2 | Capcom | Old-school shooting fun with WAY to much stuff to blow up.
  3. Mars Matrix | Capcom | This may be too old-school for some, but it's decent nonetheless.
Puzzle Game of the Year
  1. ChuChu Rocket | Sega | Sonic Team | A cool new idea with just the right amount of cuteness, plus online play.
  2. Tetris Online | Crave | Blue Planet | Yet another version of te age old puzzle game -- only this time online play is the focus.
  3. Mr. Driller | Namco | At least we know Namco is good for something.
Flight Game of the Year
  1. Aero Dancing F / AeroWings 2: Airstrike | CRI/Crave | CRI | A great game gets better with dog fighting galore and tons more variety.
  2. Starlancer | Crave | Digital Anvil | I love Wing Commander type games and this fits the bill.  Online play is a big bonus.
  3. Bang! Gunship Elite | Rayland | Red Storm | Once you get past the lethargic main menu, the graphics and challenge will engulf you with a good outer space war.
Sports Game of the Year
  1. NFL 2K1 | Sega | Visual Concepts | The best football game in existence for any system.  Online play makes it even better.
  2. NBA 2K1 | Sega | Visual Concepts | Ditto (The best basketball game in existence for any system.  Online play makes it even better.)
  3. Virtua Tennis | Sega | Hit Maker (AM3) | Great gameplay.  That's what tennis games are about.
Dance Game of the Year
  1. Space Channel 5 | Sega | United Game Artists | If you have to play this kind of game, then at least control a babe.
  2. Samba de Amigo | Sega | Sonic Team | A good dance game with a latin flair.
  3. Cool Cool Toon | SNK | Another decent dance game.
Retro Game of the Year
  1. Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness | Namco | I knew there was a reason Namco is heralded as a top developer.
  2. Q*bert DC | Majesco | Not too bad if you like the original action/puzzle game.
  3. Frogger 2 | Majesco | Again, not too bad if you like the original action game.
Simulation Game of the Year
  1. Advanced Daisenryaku | Sega | System Soft | Take control of Hitler's forces and attempt to change history in this strategy/war/sim.
  2. Aero Dancing F / AeroWings 2: Airstrike | CRI/Crave | CRI | I love great flight simulations.
  3. Railroad Tycoon 2 | G.O.D. | A cool game, as long as you like financial kingdom building games.
Original Game of the Year
  1. Seaman | Sega | Vivarium | A unique game which utilizes the Mic Device to communicate with a hybrid fish.
  2. Shenmue | Sega | AM2 | Yu Suzuki's dream game has come true on Dreamcast.
  3. Mercurius Pretty ~End of the Century~ | NEC-I | Longshot | An interesting concept in that your objective is to raise ferries.
RPG Game of the Year
  1. Eternal Arcadia / Skies of Arcadia | Sega | Overworks | Play the part of a sky faring pirate in an adventure you'll never forget.  It screams quality.
  2. Grandia II | ESP/Ubi Soft | Game Arts | The Saturn original took RPG gamers by storm.  The uber-sequel surpasses it in every way.
  3. Climax Landers / Time Stalkers | Sega | Climax Ent. | Some people don't like Dungeon RPGs, but I do.  The graphics and gameplay are good enough to keep you interested until finished.
Action/RPG Game of the Year
  1. Phantasy Star Online | Sega | Sonic Team | It's awesome playing offline.  We'll soon get a taste of the online mode (with the US release).
  2. Shenmue | Sega | AM2 | The level of interaction contained in this game is unparalleled.
  3. Silver | Infogrames | Spiral House | A decent looking and playing game with an interesting storyline.
Online Game of the Year
  1. NFL 2K1 | Sega | Visual Concepts | The best football game in existence for any system.  Online play makes it even better.
  2. Quake III Arena | Sega | Oh and another thing, "get the mouse and keyboard".
  3. Starlancer | Crave | Digital Anvil | I love Wing Commander type games and this fits the bill.  Online play is a big bonus.
Disappointing Game of the Year
  1. Speed Devils Online | Ubi Soft | What happened to the control? Load time? Frame Rate?
  2. Prince of Persia Arabian Nights | Mattel | Mindscape | I was hoping for much more in the solid gameplay department.
  3. F1 World Grand Prix 2 | Video System | Video System/Ubi Soft | What happened to the frame rate? Gameplay?
Worst Game of the Year
  1. Spec Ops II: Omega Squad | Ripcord | They had better not screw up Legend of the Blade Masters too.
  2. Urban Chaos | Eidos | Mucky Foot |  They should have left this one where it came from... Playstation.
  3. NFL Quarterback Club 2001 | Acclaim | It's not a good thing to have a given series be a part of this award in back to back years.
Sleeper Game of the Year
  1. Vanishing Point | Acclaim | Clockwork Games | I want to see more games from this developer.  Simply awesome.
  2. Fur Fighters | Acclaim | Bizarre | These two games almost make up for Acclaim's football record.
  3. Test Drive Le Mans | Infogrames | Melbourne House | This is what happens when a solid developer is allowed to program from scratch.

~ The Game of the Year ~
Shenmue | Sega | AM2 | This was really a hard choice to make.  There is so much to do in Shenmue that it's understandable why there were so many delays.  PSO is equally as awesome, but online play is still about a month away for Americans.  In the end, the fact that this game ushers in the FREE genre made my mind up.  Make no mistake, Sony and Nintendo will copy this formula.

Honorable mentions:
Phantasy Star Online | Sega | Sonic Team
Eternal Arcadia / Skies of Arcadia | Sega | Overworks
Dead or Alive 2 | Tecmo | Team Ninja
Sega GT ~Homologation Special~ | Sega
